Earliest barley harvest ever

Some farmers in the UK are experiencing their earliest ever barley harvest, with winter malting barley coming in at what has been budgeted for, according to Farmers Weekly.

With the current dry, hot days in July, farmers are quickly harvesting as much as they can of the Electrum winter barley.

Spring barley, however, is not expected to do as well due to there not being enough rain in April. That said, some farmers are reporting that yields should be good for Tardis, Planet, Tungsten, Valerie, Orwell, My Dear, and Laureate varieties.

However, in France growers are experiencing lower yields of barley due to heat and a lack of rain. With France supplying 40 percent of Europe’s malted barley harvest, prices will rise.
