Massive counterfeiting of spirits

If you are thinking of exporting spirits to India – which continues to see a rise in the market – be aware that the country is plagued by spirit counterfeiters.

According to the new report ‘The State of Counterfeiting in India – 2021’ by the Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA), out of the top five products counterfeited in India, alcohol leads the list.

ASPA said that this includes spirit fraud, trademark infringement, adulteration, or any other method of copying an established brand.

According to Indian spirit expert Sanjay Gouda, whisky is India’s most favourite spirit, with the most “revered” brand being The Macallan. This is followed by Jack Daniels, The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Jameson.

Rum and vodka are also very popular spirits.
