Here and the USA tequila has been seen more as a party drink that a real spirit. Drinkers would do shooters of tequila with the biggest debate being do you bite the lemon or lick the salt first?
And tequila’s go-to-drink, the Margarita? Again, something for a party when the only requirement seems to be a desire to get quickly drunk.
But those days might be ending for tequila which could be very well ready to take centre stage in the States and to make a move here as well.
According to VinePair, thanks to celebrity tequila distilleries and a move towards high end, better produced tequila, in the USA tequila might be well placed to eclipse bourbon as America’s favourite.
Tequila is seen as ‘cleaner’ and ‘lighter’ than bourbon. Drinkers are now more willing to explore premium brands and aged versions such as reposado, anejo, extra anejo and cristalino.
However, in order to be called tequila, it must come from a certain area of Mexico and has to have a certain percent of its raw ingredient ‘agave’ used, which over the last decade has seen a huge jump in price.
