Glengoyne has unveiled the latest addition to its sought-after series of Teapot Dram expressions with Batch No. 12, a release bottled at 59.2% ABV and limited to 3,300 bottles.
On the nose drinkers can expect toasted marshmallow, cinnamon, toffee popcorn, demerara sugar, strawberry bonbons and a hint of spearmint with a palate that is rich, bright and sweet, raspberry compote, blackcurrants, baked apples, medjool dates while sticky sherry notes start to build.
Every Glengoyne Teapot Dram is a non-age-statement whisky matured in first fill sherry casks, chosen for maximum colour and flavour and as a homage to the dramming days.
Batch No. 12 is non chill-filtered and, like all Glengoyne releases, of natural colour. It is made from a handful of casks, including European oak Oloroso butts, European oak Oloroso hogsheads and sherry hogsheads.
The company said: “The series celebrates a Glengoyne tradition from the 1960s and early 1970s, when distillery workers were given three drams a day. At most distilleries, the daily dram was new make spirit, barely matured in wood if at all.
“At Glengoyne, the staff were given mature, sherry dominant drams. Younger staff, unable to keep pace, would pour their share into a copper teapot on the canteen windowsill for their more seasoned colleagues to enjoy.
“Over the day, the teapot became full of a delightful marriage of different young, sherry matured whiskies. The practice ended in 1974, and the series carries its spirit forward in rich, sherry-matured releases made in the bold, full-flavoured style of the dramming days.”
The new release is available wxclusively from the Glengoyne Distillery Shop and the distillery’s online shop.
Glengoyne is owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, and in 2011 became the first distillery to trial a wetlands facility treating 100% of its liquid waste, with clean water flowing back into Loch Lomond and spent grains converted into energy powering 354 local homes a year.
