Another small-measure gin enters market

A problem gin distillers have in trying to create a low alcohol gin is keeping ‘gin’ in their name. A minimum of 37.5% ABV is what the Gin Guild requires for gin, which is far from being low alcohol.

An approach, however, that first Hayman’s Small Gin took – and now Inginious Gin – is to ramp up the flavour and make a concentrated gin spirit. In theory then, consumers will require less gin – giving their drinks a lower ABV – while keeping all the flavour.

Inginious Gin says to “think big taste, but small measures”. Formulated alongside spirits experts at Sloemotion Distillery in North Yorkshire, Inginious is a concentrated 43% ABV gin spirit which has 10 times the flavour concentration. Drinkers will need only a small amount then to create the perfect serve. 

Developed to partner perfectly with a non-alcoholic mixer such as tonic, Inginious Gin says that this distillate is “packed full of responsibly sourced botanicals”. These include the classic gin botanicals juniper and coriander, and a citrus blend of lemongrass, grapefruit and lime.

A 5ml serve, compared to the standard 50ml double serve of gin, diluted with 150ml of a non-alcoholic mixer such as tonic is the perfect combination, resulting in a familiar and fragrant Gin and Tonic taste experience but resulting in only 0.2 units of alcohol per serve. A 5ml measuring spoon has also been designed and comes with each purchase to ensure a perfect Inginious serve – similar in concept to Hayman’s thimble. While not completely alcohol free, Inginious significantly reduces both your alcohol and calorie intake, and all without compromising on taste.

Simon Liddle, founder of Inginious says; “For the last two years I have been looking to cut down on alcohol for health reasons. After struggling to find a tasty, low-alcohol gin, I set about creating a concentrated gin product like no other. With an aim of reducing the stigma surrounding lower alcohol drinks, Inginious Gin ensures that foregoing more traditional gins is a surprisingly simple choice.”

While overall alcohol consumption is expected to have declined in 2020, the low- and no-alcohol market is continuing to expand, with consumption expected to grow 31% by 2024, according to the IWSR. However, founder of Inginious Gin, Simon Liddle says he couldn’t find any alternatives that both tasted great and had the same aromatic zing of alcohol, so he set out to create something new.
