The Macallan toasts 200th anniversary with limited-edition release

The Macallan, the renowned single malt Scotch whisky , has announced the third release in the A Night on Earth Series marking the conclusion to the brand’s 200th anniversary celebrations.

The limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky, named A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera, pays tribute to the Spanish region where The Macallan’s cask journey begins. It is in Jerez de la Frontera, where the sherry seasoned oak casks – that one day will nurture and mature The Macallan – are meticulously crafted, laying the foundation for the whisky that follows.

A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera is matured in a perfectly balanced combination of European and American sherry seasoned oak casks, produced to The Macallan’s exacting specifications.

The unique combination delivers a richness and sweetness on the palate. The whisky’s tasting notes of pastry, grapes and anise take inspiration from the Spanish custom of eating twelve grapes before the start of the New Year and the traditional Jerez pastry, Pestiños – a rich, fried dough with sugar and aniseed or honey.

This exclusive release captures the essence of the season that marks the end of the year in southern Spain, a time for togetherness, reflection on what has passed, and a celebration of the future. Inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of Jerez’s traditions, A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera is a unique gifting offering that embodies the spirit of festivity and renewal.

The Macallan has collaborated with artist María Melero, a native of Jerez, who has channelled her memories of the festive period in her home city to create the distinctive designs that adorn this release. Her artwork enhances the unboxing experience, making it as memorable as the whisky itself.

Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker, commented: “Jerez plays a crucial role in The Macallan’s past, but also present and future. As a whisky maker, having been able to tell part of that story through a whisky has been wonderfully rewarding.

“A combination of European and American sherry seasoned casks has enabled us to capture the flavours, traditions and María’s memories of New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry wine.”

The outer design of the release features a crimson sky and a vivid sunset with sherry wine vineyards. Also featured are the roses that grow in the vineyards and act as a natural warning system of potential threats to the soil or the vines.

Upon opening, the recipient will experience a display of ‘azulejos’ – traditional Jerez wall tiles – all featuring icons representing celebrations and meaningful moments for The Macallan and Jerez, from casks to stills, from oranges to vine leaves. The inner packaging continues to tell this story, with grapes from the Jerez vineyards pictured throughout.
