Swansea’s flourishing tourism industry is injecting over £600 million annually into the local economy, and it has been given a brilliant new centerpiece to drive future growth, a new distillery.
New figures show visitors spent £609 million throughout 2023 in the Swansea, Mumbles and Gower area. The STEAM figures (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) prepared for Swansea Council also show that visitor numbers increased to more than 4.7 million last year with the tourism industry supporting 5,470 jobs in the area.
Out in front, the £15 million Penderyn Distillery at the Copperworks, which opened in July 2023, is a state-of-the-art whisky distillery and visitor experience that is helping turn heads and elevating Swansea’s reputation as a world-class destination.
Housed in the “meticulously renovated” former Hafod Copperworks site, a historic industrial complex dating back to 1808, the distillery seamlessly blends Swansea’s rich heritage with cutting-edge whisky production and tourism facilities. The result is a unique and immersive experience that pays tribute to the art of distilling while offering a tantalising glimpse into the city’s storied past.
“The Penderyn Distillery at the Copperworks is the sparkling new jewel in the crown of Swansea’s booming £600 million tourism economy,” said Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery. “We’ve created a world-class destination that honours Swansea’s industrial roots while immersing visitors in the fascinating world of sustainable whisky production.”
They explained: “The distillery’s sleek and modern design, complemented by exposed brick and steel beams, creates a captivating interplay between old and new. Interactive exhibits and informative tours take guests behind the scenes, revealing the intricate processes involved in crafting Penderyn’s award-winning whiskies.
“A true highlight is witnessing the distillation process firsthand. Visitors can marvel at the towering copper stills, custom-built by skilled craftsmen, as they gently bubble and simmer, transforming carefully selected grains into the distinctive Penderyn spirit. The heady aroma of malted barley and the gentle hiss of steam create an atmosphere that is both mesmerising and intoxicating.”
But the distillery is more than just a production facility, the company added, it’s a destination that immerses visitors in the rich tapestry of Swansea’s history and culture. The preservation and repurposing of the Copperworks site have breathed new life into this once-thriving industrial complex, serving as a testament to the city’s resilience and ingenuity.
“We wanted to create an experience that showcases our exceptional whiskies while paying tribute to Swansea’s heritage,” Davies explained. “The Copperworks site is the perfect canvas, allowing us to weave together the past and present in an educational and enjoyable way.”
Visitors can explore extensive exhibitions showcasing the Hafod Copperworks’ role in Swansea’s industrial revolution. Interactive displays and artifacts bring this storied history to life, offering a glimpse into the lives of the skilled workers who once laboured here.
The distillery is not just a place for learning, but also for indulgence and relaxation. Tasting rooms provide the perfect setting for sampling Penderyn’s exceptional whisky range, each dram a masterpiece of flavour and craft. Knowledgeable guides lead tasting experiences, imparting expertise and sharing the stories behind every bottle.
For whisky enthusiasts, exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and masterclasses offer a deeper dive into distilling and blending. These hands-on experiences educate and inspire, allowing guests to appreciate the skill and dedication behind each bottle of Penderyn.
Beyond its walls, the Penderyn Distillery has catalysed a renaissance in Swansea’s Landore district.
As Swansea’s tourism continues to thrive and generate over £600 million annually, the Penderyn Distillery stands as a shining example of the city’s ability to blend tradition and innovation into world-class attractions. With its state-of-the-art facilities, immersive experiences, and commitment to local heritage, this new jewel is a must-visit that offers something truly special.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built here at the Copperworks,” Davies says.
“Swansea has so much to offer, and we’re honoured to be a part of its £600 million tourism renaissance as a vibrant, dynamic destination. Our distillery celebrates the city’s rich legacy while representing its bright future.”
