Marks & Spencer has taken aim at Aldi over a claim that Aldi has stolen an idea from M&S gin, with M&S seeking an injunction against alleged infringement of its design.
According to the BBC, the retailer says Aldi’s blackberry and clementine gin liqueur is “strikingly similar” to its own Light Up gin.
Both retailer’s gins come in a bell-shaped bottle with a light in the base, which illuminates edible gold flakes in the liquid. The Aldi gin is about £6 cheaper than the basic £20 M&S version.
This won’t be the first time M&S has gone after Aldi over an alleged infringement of design. In April M&S said that Aldi copied its Colin the Caterpillar cake. Aldi responded by calling M&S ‘Marks and Snitches’.
At times when walking through Aldi, it seems that the German chain believes that imitation is the is the sincerest form of flattery. Products ranging from Mexican food kits to craft beers look an awful lot like somebody else’s.
