Consumers paying £150 more for spirits

The UK government continues to see spirit drinkers as cash-cows, willing to be milked for more VAT.

According to the Sun, spirit drinkers following healthy alcohol limit guidelines would by £209 a year in duty, compared with £64 for those who prefer a pint of beer or cider. That’s despite the point have 2.3 units of alcohol and a whisky highball having only two units.

Graeme Littlejohn of the Scotch Whisky Association, said: “The Chancellor should look again at these reforms which do not deliver fairness.”
