The journey into craft distilling is seen as a way of being creative, of doing something you really enjoy and most importantly, of making a living. And for many this is the outcome they’ve achieved with few regrets.
Indeed, at the recent Distiller’s Congress in London, speaker Matt Servini said that out of the 100+ distilleries he has helped set up over the last five years, almost all are still in business today.
But there is one part of the industry that seldom gets talked about. The reality for many craft distillers is long hours – often times working alone – with the pressure of trying to make a profit and still have a homelife. It’s a dangerous combination– especially when surrounded by alcohol all day – which can lead to anxiety and depression.
