Olympic gold skateboarder powered by sake

Japanese teen skateboarder Sakura Yosozumi’s quest for gold might not have ever happened if it wasn’t for a sake brewery in Wakayama, Japan.

Brewery Yoshimura Hideo Shoten heard about how local skater Yosozumi was faced with a massive commute to reach the nearest skateboard park to practise her craft.

Yoshimura Hideo Shoten turned an unused rice mill into a massive skateboard park for Yosozumi to use as her private practice grounds, turning a three-hour commute into a five minute stroll. Called ‘Sakura Park’, the skateboarder spent around eight to 10 hours a day at the park, mastering a reported 540 tricks.

In an interview, Yosozumi said: “I would not have perfected by skills without the park, I am so grateful the brewery.”
